China's Guangdong Telecom to Revamp IPTV Service

In continuation of the deployment of IPTV service in Guangdong Province, as reported in Asia Express dated December 8, 2006, Guangdong Telecom, a subsidiary of China Telecom, recently announced a five billion RMB (US$684.5 million; US$1 = 7.3 RMB) revamp project in a bid to streamline its current IPTV infrastructure in the province.

The company has invited bids for the revamp project, the result of which is slated for completion by year-end 2007. Known bidders include Huawei and ZTE, Chinese-language China Business News reported.

According to the same source, Guangdong Telecom has engaged in IPTV deployment starting in the second half of 2004. At year-end 2005, the company awarded contracts for its first-phase IPTV project to Huawei, ZTE, and UTStarcom.
